The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution as thousands of South Africans are expected to travel over the Heritage Day long weekend, which coincides with school closures.
Why authorities are warning drivers
With many families likely to travel, visit relatives and take part in holiday activities, the RTMC warned that increased traffic volumes are anticipated on major routes and around popular destinations. Motorists were advised to check traffic and weather conditions before departing and to allow sufficient time for journeys.
Practical safety advice
The RTMC urged drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before setting off, including checks on tyres, brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and fluid levels. It also advised motorists to obey speed limits and to adjust speed according to road, traffic and weather conditions.
Road users were warned to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and to refrain from distracted driving by avoiding the use of cellphones while driving. The RTMC also stressed that all occupants should wear their seatbelts at all times.
Long trips and vulnerable road users
During long journeys, the RTMC recommended taking regular breaks and avoiding driving when tired. Drivers should maintain a safe following distance and exercise extra caution around pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and children, particularly in residential areas and near recreational facilities.
Parents and caregivers were encouraged to ensure children are secured in appropriate child-restraint systems and to remind them about basic pedestrian safety when near busy roads, shopping centres and public transport facilities.
