Still using South Africa’s familiar green barcoded ID book? It’s days are numbered.

The Department of Home Affairs has indicated that the document could become non-functional within the next two years, putting 2028 on the horizon for its eventual phase-out. An exact deadline has not yet been announced.
The update comes as South Africa moves towards replacing green ID books with Smart ID cards and a more digitally integrated identity system.
According to Thulani Mavuso, Deputy Director-General for Operations at Home Affairs, the department expects the green ID book to become non-functional within two years. The comments offer the clearest indication yet of the likely timeframe.
Why is the green ID book being phased out?
The green barcoded book has been used for decades, but Home Affairs has cited security concerns, including its vulnerability to fraud and identity theft, as a reason for moving to Smart IDs.
Around 16 million South Africans still use green ID books, according to Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber, making the transition a significant one.
The government is consequently expanding access to Smart ID applications through Home Affairs offices, banks and mobile services.
What should green ID book holders do?
There is no need to panic just yet. The green ID book remains valid, and Home Affairs has not announced an exact date for when it will stop being recognised.
But if you are still using one, replacing it sooner rather than later could save you a scramble when the final deadline arrives.
Home Affairs has been expanding its partnerships with commercial banks, where South Africans can apply for Smart IDs at participating branches. By July 2026, the department said its digital partnership covered 327 bank branches, with plans to expand further.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has also confirmed that South Africa will progressively discontinue the green ID book, with Home Affairs responsible for setting the final date.
For now, your green book still works. But with 2028 emerging as the likely end point, it may be worth making the trip to home affairs for your Smart ID before you’re forced to.
