The Kyrgyzstan lake where nomads still live beside the water

Posted on 15 October 2026 By Zayaan Marthinus

High in Kyrgyzstan’s mountains, white yurts dot the grasslands beside an alpine lake. Horses graze across open pastures as herding families settle in for the summer, continuing a seasonal tradition shaped by the land for generations.

This is Song-Kul, a remote lake sitting around 3,016 metres above sea level. Each summer, families move their livestock to the surrounding jailoo, or high-altitude pastures, before returning to lower ground as winter approaches.

There are no busy waterfronts or rows of hotels here. Instead, life follows the seasons, offering travellers a glimpse of Kyrgyzstan’s living nomadic heritage.

A life shaped by the seasons

Song-Kul, also spelt Song-Köl, is Kyrgyzstan’s second-largest lake, after Issyk-Kul. Located in the Naryn region, surrounded by rolling grasslands and mountain peaks.

From around June to September, depending on weather conditions, herders bring their horses, sheep and cattle to graze on the summer pastures. This seasonal movement, known as transhumance, allows families to follow fresh grazing before returning to lower elevations for winter.

Song-Kul is also part of the Karatal-Japyryk State Nature Reserve and a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance. It’s waters and surrounding grasslands support migratory and breeding birds alongside the communities that depend on the land.

Inside a traditional Kyrgyz yurt

For herding families, the yurt is a practical summer home. It’s collapsible wooden frame is covered in felt, making it easier to transport between pastures while providing shelter in the mountain climate.

Inside, woven textiles and colourful felt carpets bring warmth to the simple space. The craftsmanship remains an important part of Kyrgyz cultural heritage.

Some families welcome travellers into their yurts, offering traditional meals and a taste of kymyz, fermented mare’s milk associated with pastoral life. Staying overnight is an opportunity to experience the pastures beyond their postcard appeal, where daily life revolves around the animals and the weather.

More than a mountain escape

Song-Kul’s wetlands provide habitat for migratory and breeding birds, while the grasslands sustain the livestock that local families depend on. The lake is both an ecologically important landscape and a working home.

Visitors should respect that balance by avoiding disturbance to wildlife and livestock, asking permission before photographing people and taking their rubbish with them.

Planning a visit

The best time to visit is generally June to September, when the summer pastures are accessible and yurt camps are operating. Kochkor is a useful starting point for arranging transport, accommodation and guided horseback treks.

Reaching the lake usually involves rough mountain roads, so a suitable vehicle or organised trip is recommended. Facilities are basic, nights can be cold even in summer, and the altitude is worth considering when planning your stay. Pack warm layers and waterproof clothing, and confirm road conditions and accommodation before setting off.

A different kind of escape

Each summer, Song-Kul becomes a temporary home for herding families before the yurts come down and the livestock returns to lower ground.

For travellers willing to venture beyond Kyrgyzstan’s better-known destinations, the lake offers more than mountain scenery. It offers  a chance to experience a landscape where seasonal migration and traditional ways of life remain part of the present, not simply a memory of the past.
