10 Coffee shops to try on your next visit to Pretoria

Posted on 26 July 2023 By Jordyn Johnson

Pretoria might be known as one of South Africa’s capital cities or the Purple/Jacaranda city, but it should also be known as the land of good coffee.

Every time I visit the city, there are new coffee shops, beautifully designed, aesthetically pleasing, and serving delicious coffee and delicious foods and dishes. The next time you’re in Pretoria, try and visit a few of these amazing coffee shops.

1. Sorcery

Come for the coffee and stay for the view at Sorcery. Amidst the ruins of a building, with greenery hanging from every beam and surface, you can indulge in a delicious something from the cafe.

2. Culture Coffee

From a container to a coffee shop in Moreleta Park, Culture Coffee shares its journey in picture frames on the wall. Choose to sit on one of their cosy couches inside, or grab a table outside for some fresh air and a good coffee.

3. Grounded at Echo

Grounded at Echo doesn’t just serve good coffee and a cool atmosphere, it is also involved in community projects and ethical business projects. It’s been going since 2014 and is a space where you can feel at home, chat with friends, and enjoy a warm drink and delicious food.

4. Plato

Plato seems to be growing around the city as more of their coffee shops crop up. Not only are their coffee perfectly crafted, but their customer service is second to none. You’ll often find a cute message on your coffee cup from one of the baristas, and the design of each store is simple, modern, and comfortable.

5. Spout

This roadside container cafe is set between other roadside cafes within the vibey Hazelwood Village. Their coffees are delicious, their food is just as good, and their decor is fresh and classy.

6. Press for Coffee

This cute little window cafe in the middle of Mississippi Street is the perfect excuse for a walk. Press the doorbell to get the barista’s attention (hence the name), and enjoy a Lucky Bread Co. cappuccino.

7. Bootleggers

What began in Cape Town has slowly made its way to Pretoria, and the locals (and visitors) are not upset about it. This classy spot to enjoy a morning coffee serves a tasty freezo on a warm day and a well-crafted flat white when the temperatures plummet.

8. Hemels

A day in the sun with a crispy chocolate croissant sounds like my kind of Saturday… or any day. Hemels is a beautiful and simple coffee shop that spills out onto a lawn that kids and dogs can enjoy as much as the adults who get to snack on sweet treats.

9. IC Coffee

Another great spot that seats you outside on a lawn that kids and pups can take advantage of. Different containers serve different food options, like coffee, baked goods, and pizza, so everyone can order what they prefer.

10. Hooked Coffee

‘Get ready, get set, get hooked!’

There is no seating area at their Garsfontein branch, but this spot is a great grab-and-go coffee shop that serves an awesome cup of coffee. Although only an express shop, a lot of effort has gone into the design and aesthetics of the cafe.
