If May had an itinerary, it might just follow the alphabet, writes Miriam Kimvangu.

Cooler days, clearer skies and quieter roads make this a month that invites a more playful approach to travel planning. Start with a letter and see where it leads. In this case, M opens the door to misty mountains, meaningful heritage sites and memorable wildlife encounters across South Africa.

Mapungubwe National Park

In Limpopo, Mapungubwe National Park combines ecological and archaeological significance. May is a favourable time to visit due to milder daytime temperatures and reduced vegetation density, which improves game viewing conditions.

The park supports species such as elephant, giraffe and a variety of antelope, often seen along riverine corridors. In addition to wildlife, Mapungubwe is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The remains of an early African kingdom can be explored through guided visits to Mapungubwe Hill and the interpretation centre. The landscape is defined by sandstone formations and baobab trees, which stand out clearly under late autumn skies.

Magoebaskloof

Magoebaskloof lies between Polokwane and Tzaneen and is known for its high rainfall and indigenous forest cover. By May, rainfall has largely subsided, leaving behind lush vegetation and stable trail conditions.

This makes the area suitable for hiking, birdwatching and scenic drives. Trails range from short forest walks to longer routes that include waterfalls and elevated viewpoints. The cooler climate distinguishes Magoebaskloof from surrounding lowveld regions, offering a temperate alternative for travellers. It is also a recognised birding destination, with several endemic and forest-dependent species recorded in the area.

Mountain Zebra National Park

Mountain Zebra National Park is situated near Cradock and plays a key role in the conservation of the Cape mountain zebra. May signals the beginning of the dry season in this region, which improves overall safari conditions.

Wildlife is more active during daylight hours due to cooler temperatures, and shorter grass increases visibility across the plains. In addition to zebra, the park hosts cheetah, buffalo and a range of antelope species. Its relatively compact size and lower visitor numbers make it suitable for self-drive safaris, particularly for travellers looking for a quieter alternative to larger reserves.

Matjiesfontein

Matjiesfontein is a small heritage village located along the N1 highway in the Karoo. Established in the late nineteenth century, it remains one of the best-preserved Victorian-era railway towns in South Africa.

May’s moderate daytime temperatures make it ideal for exploring on foot. Visitors can access museums, join guided tours and learn about the town’s role during the Anglo Boer War. As part of a broader road trip, Matjiesfontein provides a historical counterpoint to more nature-focused destinations.

Mier

The Mier region is located in the Northern Cape, bordering the southern section of Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. It is characterised by semi-arid conditions, red dunes and expansive open landscapes.

May is well suited to visiting due to cooler temperatures following the summer heat. The region supports community-based tourism initiatives that provide insight into local culture and history. Its proximity to the Kgalagadi also makes it a practical base for exploring the wider Kalahari ecosystem.

Mkhambathi Nature Reserve

Mkhambathi Nature Reserve lies along the Wild Coast and is known for its combination of coastal grassland, river systems and marine environments. Seasonal conditions in May include cooler temperatures and lower humidity, which improve comfort for outdoor activities.

The reserve features waterfalls, coastal trails and opportunities for birdwatching. Limited infrastructure contributes to a less commercialised experience, making it suitable for travellers seeking quieter, nature-focused destinations. Its ecological diversity supports both conservation interest and general exploration.

Beyond South Africa: More M Destinations in Southern Africa

For travellers extending their plans into the broader region, the following destinations maintain the M theme while offering varied landscapes and seasonal advantages in May:

  • Makgadikgadi Pans
  • Moremi Game Reserve
  • Matobo Hills
  • Maputo
  • Morrungulo
  • Mariental
  • Maltahöhe

Whether your next trip continues through the alphabet or returns to familiar favourites, May remains a strong foundation for travel.
