A landmark birthday will be marked in a fittingly delicate way at the Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm, where 100 butterflies are set to take flight in honour of Sir David Attenborough turning 100.

According to BBC, the commemorative release will take place on Friday 8 May inside the attraction’s lush Rainforest Flight Area. Learners from Stratford-upon-Avon Primary School and Thomas Jolyffe Primary School will join the event, adding a strong educational focus to the celebration.
At the centre of the moment will be the release of 100 blue morpho butterflies. Known for their vivid, iridescent wings, these insects are native to the tropical forests of Mexico, Central America and South America. Their appearance is brief but striking, with a lifespan of around 115 days spent feeding and reproducing.
Clive Farrell, owner of the butterfly farm, says the tribute carries deep meaning. He notes that Attenborough has inspired generations to value wildlife and protect the natural world. Hosting the celebration at a site he has previously visited makes the occasion particularly special. Sharing it with young people, he adds, underscores the importance of nurturing future environmental stewards.
Local leaders, including Stratford-upon-Avon Mayor Dani Hunter and MP Manuela Perteghella, are expected to attend.
While the release is symbolic, it also highlights a serious conservation message. Blue morpho butterflies face growing pressure from habitat loss and over-collection, threats that mirror wider challenges across global ecosystems.
Organisers say the event is designed not only to honour an extraordinary legacy but to spark curiosity and care for nature in younger generations. It is a small, vivid reminder that even fleeting beauty can leave a lasting impact.
