According to The South African, The luxury Blue Train has been ranked among the world’s most scenic train journeys, securing a place on a global list that celebrates routes known for unforgettable views and visual impact.

For South Africa, it’s another moment of pride on the international travel stage and for rail enthusiasts, it’s confirmation of what many already believe: the Blue Train is in a league of its own.

How the world’s most scenic train journeys were chosen

The ranking didn’t rely on opinions or travel influencers—it was based on visual attention research.

A travel insurance company in the UK, InsureandGo, analysed 24 train routes from around the world by showing participants images of iconic scenery from each journey. Eye-tracking software measured how quickly people noticed the images and how long they stayed engaged with them.

Each route was then given a score out of 100 based on how “eye-catching” it was.

The result? A data-driven look at which train journeys truly stop people in their tracks.

Where the Blue Train stands in the global ranking

South Africa’s luxury rail experience secured 14th place out of 15 finalists, earning a score of 75.5.

It sits just behind New Zealand’s TranzAlpine and just ahead of Australia’s famous The Ghan.

While it may not have topped the list, its inclusion places it firmly among some of the most visually stunning rail journeys in the world.

And when you consider the competition—routes through the Swiss Alps, Japanese forests, Canadian mountains, and South American landscapes, that’s no small achievement.

The journey that defines luxury rail travel in South Africa

The Blue Train isn’t just a mode of transport it’s an experience shaped by time, landscape, and atmosphere.

Stretching roughly 1,600 kilometres between Pretoria and Cape Town, the journey takes about 54 hours. That’s more than two full days of watching South Africa shift from inland plains to coastal beauty.

Passengers move through changing scenery that reflects the country’s diversity, from open landscapes to dramatic horizons, all while travelling in one of the most luxurious train environments on the continent.

It’s slow travel at its most elegant and that’s exactly what makes it memorable.

Standing alongside the world’s most iconic rail routes

The list that featured the Blue Train was led by some of the most famous railway journeys on Earth.

At the top was Japan’s Sagano Romantic Train, followed closely by Switzerland’s Bernina Express and Glacier Express—routes known for dramatic mountain scenery and postcard-perfect views.

Other entries included scenic experiences across Scotland, Brazil, Canada, the United States, Peru, and Austria.

Each route was chosen for its visual impact, from snow-covered peaks to forest canopies and river valleys.

Within that global lineup, the Blue Train’s inclusion highlights how strongly South Africa’s landscapes compete on the world stage.

Why this ranking matters for South African tourism

Beyond the prestige, rankings like this often have a ripple effect.

They shape how international travellers view destinations, especially those unfamiliar with South Africa beyond major cities like Cape Town or Johannesburg.

The Blue Train’s recognition adds to a growing list of tourism highlights positioning South Africa as a premium travel destination—not just for safaris and mountains, but for luxury experiences that blend comfort with scenery.

It also aligns with a broader tourism trend: travellers increasingly seeking slow, immersive journeys rather than rushed itineraries.

And in that space, rail travel is quietly making a comeback.

Social media pride and local reaction

Online reactions to the ranking have been a mix of pride and nostalgia.

South Africans have long associated the Blue Train with special occasions—honeymoons, milestone celebrations, and bucket-list travel experiences. Seeing it recognised internationally has reignited conversations about local tourism gems that often don’t get global attention.

There’s also a sense of “we knew this already”—a familiar sentiment whenever South African landmarks or experiences earn international validation.

From Cape Town to Pretoria, the reaction has been simple: it’s about time the world noticed.

A reminder of what makes train travel special

While faster transport options dominate modern travel, journeys like the Blue Train offer something different: time to actually see the world you’re moving through.

No airports. No rush. Just a continuous window into changing landscapes.

That’s ultimately what this ranking highlights, not just scenic beauty, but the emotional experience of travel itself.

And for South Africa, it reinforces a powerful message: some of the world’s most memorable journeys don’t just happen at the destination, they happen along the way.
