Escaped lion in Malelane not yet found

Posted on 9 April 2020

The lion roaming Malelane has yet to be captured. As of 7 April the animal was still on the loose, according to the Lowvelder. The community are warned to be vigilant as the animal may turn to domestic animals due to a lack of natural prey and also is a major threat to humans.

Chairperson of the Malalane Community Police Forum (CPF), Mel Preddy, spoke to Lowvelder and said that the lion was seen near a local nursery on Monday 6 April. Since then the animal has not been sighted.

The area from Magnesite to Malalane, between the Crocodile River has been declared a high risk area. According to Preddy, based on the visual descriptions and track marks found, the lion is a young male.

If you see the animal, contact Malalane CPF on 082-777-6076 or

MTPA Gerrie Camacho (predator specialist) at 082-353-9097

You will be asked to send your Google Maps location to either of these numbers via Whatsapp.
