It is a modern and welcoming space that is expected to strengthen the town’s position as an important stop along South Africa’s cruise tourism routes. The development also brings fresh energy to the local economy, with more visitors expected throughout the coming seasons.

A new experience for guests

According to Travel and Tour World, the new facility sits right next to the Mossel Bay quay and gives travellers an efficient and attractive entry point into the Garden Route. It brings together customs checks, visitor assistance and security services in one convenient location. This creates a smooth and comfortable arrival experience for both day visitors and longer stay guests.

The first ship to use the facility was the SH Diana. It carried more than one hundred and sixty international passengers and crew members who stepped into Mossel Bay as the very first group to enjoy the upgraded experience.

Growth for the region

Cruise tourism in the area has been growing steadily. The Port of Mossel Bay expects twenty three ship calls in the upcoming season which is a rise from the previous year. This increase supports local tour operators, restaurants, shops and accommodation providers who benefit directly from traveller spending.

Transnet National Ports Authority led the development. The organisation emphasised that the new space was created in response to the needs of tourism partners and the community. The aim is to support long term economic development while improving the experience for visitors.

A focus on sustainability

The design of the building includes environmentally conscious features that support responsible travel. Energy efficient systems and proper waste management form part of the facility’s approach. Mossel Bay hopes to grow as a cruise destination in a way that protects its natural surroundings.

A bigger picture for cruise tourism

The Western Cape has already seen strong momentum in cruise travel. The previous season brought significant financial benefits to the region. With Mossel Bay’s new facility now open, the town is better positioned to attract major cruise lines and welcome more international travellers. This has strong potential to create jobs and inject spending into the local economy.
