A closer look at legendary figures
Each episode focuses on a single saint, unpacking both the mythology and the historical realities behind their lives. Featured figures include Francis of Assisi, Joan of Arc, John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, Maximilian Kolbe, Moses the Black and Sebastian — individuals remembered for acts of courage, sacrifice and unwavering conviction.
Guided by leading scholars, the series examines the political and cultural landscapes that shaped these figures. The expert commentary helps contextualise their choices, struggles and lasting influence, revealing why their stories continue to resonate across generations.
History through a cinematic lens
Combining expert interviews, archival material and dramatic reenactments, The Saints aims to bring historical moments vividly to life. Carefully staged recreations allow viewers to experience pivotal events in ways traditional artwork and written records alone cannot fully convey.
Scorsese’s narration anchors the series, reflecting his long-standing interest in the intersection of humanity, morality and faith. Known for films such as Raging Bull, Goodfellas and The Aviator, the acclaimed director applies a thoughtful cinematic approach to stories often told only through legend.
The result is a visually rich exploration that reframes familiar religious icons as complex human figures shaped by their times.
