Photographer captures incredible lightning storm over Joburg

Johannesburg is well-known for its incredible lightning storms and capturing them is an art.

South African photographer Christo Smith captured the sky in all its lit up glory, as forks of lighting struck over the City of Gold on Friday, November 27.

Smith said he rushed to the roof of the Bellaires Centre in Northriding to take the shot as the storm rolled over the city.

“I then tried to shoot the lightning but the rain and hail stopped me quite quickly,” he said in a Facebook post.

“I then shot some of the storm through a door way but as soon as the rain softened a bit, I managed to get this shot…”

The shot is a composite of images that are overlaid to create this magnificent scene. From his vantage point the image is looking out over Fourways towards Midrand and Pretoria.

“This was incredible to witness and this photo simply does not do the majesty of nature justice. I hope that you like it though,” he said.
