From October 2026 through April 2027, the airline will operate up to 11 weekly flights between London Heathrow and Cape Town, alongside 10 weekly services to Johannesburg. According to travelnews.africa, the expanded schedule is aimed at giving travellers greater flexibility during one of South Africa’s busiest tourism periods.
According to the airline, the updated timetable has also been designed to improve convenience for passengers. Earlier morning arrivals into South Africa will allow travellers to maximise their time on the ground, while later evening departures to London are expected to offer a smoother overnight journey experience.
The move comes as Virgin Atlantic responds to growing demand from both leisure and business travellers, particularly those seeking premium long-haul travel options between South Africa and the United Kingdom.
Marc Harding, Virgin Atlantic’s Country Manager for South Africa, said the airline has seen strong momentum in the local market, with travellers increasingly prioritising convenience, comfort and connectivity. He added that South Africa remains an important part of the carrier’s global network.
Passengers travelling via Heathrow will also have access to onward connections across Europe, North America and the Caribbean through the airline’s broader route network and international partnerships.
The capacity increase forms part of a broader strategic adjustment for the airline. Recent reports indicate that Virgin Atlantic is scaling back selected routes elsewhere in its network while investing more heavily in African destinations, including South Africa.
Virgin Atlantic has operated flights to South Africa for nearly three decades, with Cape Town and Johannesburg continuing to rank among its key long-haul destinations.
