World Kindness Day: FOUR PAWS inspires South Africans to act kindly

Posted on 13 November 2025 By Lee-Ann Steyn

As the world marks World Kindness Day today, South Africans are being reminded that compassion shouldn’t stop with people; it extends to the animals that share our homes, farms, and natural spaces.

According to global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS, this year’s celebration serves as ‘a powerful opportunity to reflect on how kindness can shape a more humane South Africa’, particularly in a country rich in biodiversity but facing ongoing challenges in animal welfare.

Turning compassion into action

The international animal welfare organisation is urging citizens to turn compassion into everyday action, from supporting local shelters to making more ethical shopping and lifestyle choices.

As FOUR PAWS notes, kindness doesn’t have to be grand to make an impact.

‘Kindness is a choice we make every day,’ said Fiona Miles, who is the Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa.

‘In South Africa, where animals face everything from neglect to exploitation, World Kindness Day is a chance to stand up and say: ‘Not on our watch.”‘ Whether it’s rescuing a stray or choosing a cruelty-free product, every act of compassion counts.’

To help citizens take meaningful steps, the organisation shared several ways to turn kindness into action:

  • Support local shelters: Donate food, blankets, or even just a few hours of your time to an animal shelter near you.
  • Choose plant-based for your braai: Try a meat-free braai this weekend; think grilled mielies, baked potatoes, chakalaka, or veggie sosaties.
  • Say no to wildlife exploitation: Skip tourist attractions that promote cub petting or lion walks. Instead, support ethical sanctuaries like LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary.
  • Be a responsible pet owner: Ensure your pets are sterilised, vaccinated, and microchipped, and keep them safe during fireworks season.
  • Adopt, don’t shop: Consider opening your home to a rescued animal rather than buying from breeders.
  • Speak up: Use the FOUR PAWS Animal Welfare Advocacy Guide to help raise awareness about unethical practices.
  • Shop with compassion: Choose cruelty-free beauty, fashion, and cleaning products.

As outlined by FOUR PAWS, these small, conscious decisions can collectively shift the needle toward a kinder society for all species.

The organisation hopes that World Kindness Day 2025 will inspire more people to see kindness not just as a sentiment, but as something that can be lived daily, through mindful choices and compassionate behaviour.

In a world full of choices, choose kindness for every paw.
