Jackal rescued from wire snare near Hartbeespoort

Posted on 1 July 2021 By Anita Froneman

The team at the Owl Rescue Centre in Hartbeespoort recently rescued a young male black-backed jackal that was caught in a wire snare.

“A couple of young lads had gone hiking and found him like this in the mountains, we then went hiking to go and rescue the little guy,” the Centre said on Facebook. “We cut the wire off and Dr Danielle Smith from Broederstroom Vet Clinic worked until 8pm [that] night to stitch up the wound. We do work with some pretty cool vets!”

Named Johnny, the jackal made a full recovery and could be released back into the wild on Wednesday, June 30. “Johnny the jackal found his freedom tonight when we took him home,” the Centre said.
