Tankwa Karoo National Park

Posted on 29 July 2011

I’ve been to the Tankwa Karoo National Park before, for Getaway Magazine, back in 2007, when I wrote an article about this emerging national park. After a week in the park, and spending time with park manager Conrad Strauss and section ranger Letsie Coetzee, I realized that this was a very special place. The flowers at the time were overwhelming in their colours, diversity and beauty. I lost myself, emotionally, within the vast skies, distant horizons and pervading sense of peace. As a person, I can often worry too much, but the Tankwa seemed to absorb all my anxiety and emotional stress.

Now that I’m back here again, I realize – again – how special the Tankwa is. You’re probably going to get tired of me saying this while I’m travelling on Year in the Wild, but every place I’ve been to so far – Table Mountain, West Coast NP, Cederberg, and now Tankwa Karoo National Park – has taken me in (with all my worries concerns and self doubt), filtered all the negative stuff from my soul, and I’ve come away feeling renewed and restored. More than that though, these places help me to believe there is Someone or Something watching over me.

Hope you enjoy the photos! And remember to stay wild and free! For more photos, please check out http://www.yearinthewild.com or http://www.facebook.com/YearInTheWild.

I have to say thanks again to Garret de Vries and Lofty Baadjies at Tankwa Karoo National Park for fixing my leaking fuel tank this week. You guys make me proud to be a South African.
