Cape Town crowned world’s best mountain escape for 2026

Cape Town has claimed the top spot as the world’s leading mountain escape for 2026, edging out iconic alpine destinations across Europe.

According to travelnews.africa, the latest ranking, compiled by international connectivity provider Holafly, places the Mother City ahead of established mountain hubs such as Chamonix, Zakopane and Bergen. It is a notable win for African tourism. For Cape Town, it reinforces a reputation that has been steadily building for years.

The study evaluated destinations using a mix of practical and experiential factors. These included hiking opportunities, affordability, accessibility, accommodation availability, air quality and overall liveability. Across the board, Cape Town performed strongly, earning an overall score of 76.9, the highest on the list.

At the centre of this appeal is Table Mountain. The flat-topped icon, recognised as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, continues to define the city’s skyline and global identity.

Cape Town is not a traditional mountain destination. It does not rely on ski seasons or remote alpine retreats. Instead, it offers a layered experience within a compact footprint. Travellers can hike one of the city’s 281 trails in the morning, take in panoramic views from the summit by midday, and end the day along the Atlantic Seaboard as the sun sets.

This diversity is a defining strength. Mountains meet ocean. Urban energy blends with nature. Wine estates, wildlife encounters and coastal drives sit within easy reach of the city centre.

Accessibility also plays a role. With Cape Town International Airport located just over 10 miles from the city, the destination is far easier to reach than many global mountain escapes.

The recognition comes at a time when mountain travel is gaining traction worldwide. According to recent travel data, 71% of travellers are considering mountain destinations, while bookings for mountain-view accommodation have increased significantly year on year.

The city increasingly stands on its own as a primary travel drawcard, rather than simply a starting point for wider South African itineraries. While safari experiences remain a major attraction, more travellers are choosing the Mother City specifically for its unique combination of scenery, outdoor adventure and lifestyle appeal.

In a competitive global landscape, destinations that offer variety, accessibility and nature-rich experiences are rising to the top. Cape Town now leads that pack.
